First 10 minutes
Show your child the light-bulb hints: if they get stuck they can pop a hint (Macworld; Wikipedia). On Switch, Switchaboo recommends handheld mode with the touchscreen, because moving the cursor with the right stick is awkward. Nobody on our team has played the opening yet.
Good to know: Short and gentle: Switchaboo calls it 'an endearing three hour adventure'. Collectible bones and costumes are optional (Switchaboo; TechRaptor). Platform differences: on phones and tablets you move with on-screen arrows and tap, swipe or drag objects (Wikipedia; TapSmart); on Switch you can use buttons or the touchscreen in handheld mode, and it uses HD Rumble (Switchaboo). Wikipedia lists iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux and Switch. The ESRB descriptors come from the Nintendo store listing (rated Everyone); we didn't find a record in the ESRB's own search.
Sensory scale
Each item is scored from 0 to 3: 0 = None; 1 = Mild, or can be turned off; 2 = Frequent; 3 = Intense and can’t be avoided. “Not enough info yet” means we couldn’t find good evidence, so we didn’t guess. For “Ease of stopping”, a higher score means it’s harder to stop.
Mode: Story levels (single-player)
| What we check | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Flashing or strobe effects | Not enough info yet | No source on flashing. Source for Flashing or strobe effects, Story levels (single-player) |
| Sudden loud sounds | Not enough info yet | No source on sudden loud sounds. TechRaptor calls the music 'creepy-cute'; Switchaboo says the soundtrack can be lighthearted one moment and tense the next. Source for Sudden loud sounds, Story levels (single-player) |
| Timers or time pressure | 1 of 3 | No countdown timer reported, but platforming includes 'timed traps' that test reflexes (TechRaptor). Source for Timers or time pressure, Story levels (single-player) |
| Failure and losing | 1 of 3 | Mimpi can 'die', for example by falling into water (TapSmart), but save checkpoints come at almost every puzzle, so little is lost (Macworld). An optional Challenge mode replays levels with only one life (Wikipedia). Source for Failure and losing, Story levels (single-player) |
| Difficulty spikes | 0 of 3 | Reviews agree it's easy: 'isn't a challenging game by any means', with a 'very generous' hint system (Macworld); 'simplistic, and easy to play' (TapSmart); 'never too frustrating' (TechRaptor). Hint bulbs can be collected and used when stuck (Wikipedia). Source for Difficulty spikes, Story levels (single-player) |
| Scary content and jump scares | 1 of 3 | ESRB: Comic Mischief and Mild Fantasy Violence (Nintendo store). Switchaboo: mostly lighthearted, but some more mature themes, such as drug testing on lab animals (in one dream Mimpi rescues lab rats, Macworld). Source for Scary content and jump scares, Story levels (single-player) Still checking: Check the lab-animal dream for anything upsetting for sensitive kids. |
| Screen motion and camera speed | Not enough info yet | No source on screen motion. It's a 2D side-scrolling puzzle platformer (Wikipedia). Source for Screen motion and camera speed, Story levels (single-player) |
| Competition and online strangers | 0 of 3 | Single-player (Wikipedia; Nintendo store: 1 player). Source for Competition and online strangers, Story levels (single-player) |
| Ease of stopping | 1 of 3 | Save checkpoints at almost every puzzle (Macworld). The whole game is short (Switchaboo: about three hours). Source for Ease of stopping, Story levels (single-player) |
| Reading load and text speed | 0 of 3 | Each dream's story is told in illustrated thought bubbles with no words (Macworld). Characters murmur instead of speaking (Switchaboo). Source for Reading load and text speed, Story levels (single-player) |
