Is Roblox OK for autistic kids?

Roblox can be OK for some autistic kids, but only with parental controls set up and an adult nearby, because Roblox isn’t one game. It’s a platform of millions of games made by different people, so flashing, sudden sounds and timers change every time your child opens a new one. Here’s what our rating found. Full scores are on our Roblox game page.
Not medical advice. This guide is general information for families, not medical advice. Every child is different, and you know yours best. If your child has epilepsy or is sensitive to flashing lights, talk to your doctor and preview games yourself first.
The short version
- Sensory content depends on the game. Flashing, sounds, timers, losing, difficulty, screen motion and saving all vary from game to game, so we can’t rate them for Roblox as a whole. We found no setting that turns off flashing across all of Roblox.
- Your child’s age changes a lot. Roblox now gives kids 5–8 a Roblox Kids account and kids 9–15 a Roblox Select account in most regions, each with different limits on games and chat (Roblox Safety Center). That only works if the account has your child’s real age.
- Content and strangers are still the bigger risks. Common Sense Media rates Roblox 13+ and says it’s “potentially OK” for younger kids only with account restrictions on and close supervision.
- Spending pressure is real. Common Sense Media flags pressure to spend Robux, driven by limited-time events and other players.
What our rating says
Roblox Kids account (ages 5–8 in most regions)
According to the Roblox Safety Center (checked October 17, 2026):
- Scary or inappropriate content: 1 out of 3. Only games with Roblox’s lowest maturity ratings (Minimal and Mild) are available, and those games go through a multi-step review before kids can see them. This score is based on Roblox’s own description. We haven’t seen an independent review of these accounts yet, and Common Sense Media has warned that user-made content can slip through moderation.
- Strangers: 1 out of 3. Chat is off by default, and chat outside games is turned off. If you turn in-game chat on, your child can only chat with users aged 5–12 and trusted friends. Other players are still in the same games.
Roblox Select account (ages 9–15 in most regions)
- Scary or inappropriate content: 2 out of 3. Games can be rated up to Moderate, though you can lower that for kids 9–12 (Roblox Safety Center). Common Sense Media says experience ratings “aren’t perfect.”
- Strangers: 2 out of 3. In-game chat is on by default with age-appropriate players: 9–12 year olds can chat with users aged 5–15. You can turn chat off for children under 13. One-on-one chat in games is off unless you turn it on, and voice chat isn’t available for ages 9–12 (Roblox Safety Center). Common Sense Media says chat built into a game by its developer, and text “signs” held up by players, can still reach your child.
For both account types
- Screen motion: unknown. Roblox has a Reduced Motion setting, but it mainly affects menus and only works where each game’s developer supports it. It doesn’t calm the camera in games.
- Reading: 1 out of 3. There are few long stories, but menus use small text, and the text for spotting other players is even smaller.
- Stopping: unknown. Saving works differently in every game, and limited-time events and Robux offers can make stopping harder.
Roblox says accounts, settings and controls vary by region, so check what your child’s account actually shows.
With default or open settings
- Scary or inappropriate content: 3 out of 3. Common Sense Media describes violent games, “condo games” with adult themes, gambling-style play, bullying and hate speech.
- Strangers: 3 out of 3. Kids under 13 can play alongside teens and adults, and text and voice chat in some games can expose them to strangers and cyberbullying.
Settings to change before your child plays
- Make sure the account has your child’s real age. That decides whether they get a Roblox Kids or Roblox Select account, and Common Sense Media says many safety features don’t work otherwise.
- On a Roblox Select account (ages 9–15), decide whether to turn chat off (you can for under-13s) and whether to lower the maturity level for ages 9–12.
- Link your own account: Settings > Parental Controls > Add Parent. Then set content restrictions, chat, spending limits and screen time.
- Block specific games under Parental Controls > Content Restrictions > Blocked Experiences.
- If your child plays on a console, set up PlayStation Family Management or Xbox Family Settings too. They work alongside Roblox’s own controls.
- Preview each new game together before your child plays it alone. Because every game is different, this is the only way to check flashing and sounds.

- A Short Hike: a small offline exploring game with no flashes listed and no time pressure.
FAQ
Is Roblox OK for a 5- or 6-year-old?
Common Sense Media rates Roblox 13+ and says it’s “potentially OK” for younger kids only with account restrictions on and close supervision. Roblox now puts kids 5–8 in a Roblox Kids account, which only shows Minimal and Mild rated games and has chat off by default. If your young child loves building, Minecraft in Creative mode on Peaceful, played offline, is still a calmer place to start.
What’s the difference between Roblox Kids and Roblox Select?
Roblox Kids accounts (ages 5–8 in most regions) only show games rated Minimal or Mild and have chat off by default. Roblox Select accounts (ages 9–15) allow games up to Moderate and have in-game chat on by default with age-appropriate players, though parents can turn chat off for under-13s (Roblox Safety Center).
Does Roblox have flashing lights?
Some games may, and some may not. Every Roblox game is made by a different creator, and we found no platform-wide setting to turn off flashing. If your child is photosensitive, preview each game yourself and talk to your doctor.
Can I turn off chat on Roblox?
In a Roblox Kids account, chat is already off unless you turn it on. In a Roblox Select account, you can turn chat off for children under 13. But Common Sense Media says chat built into a game by its developer can still work, and players can hold up text signs that everyone in the game can see.
Does Roblox have a reduced motion setting?
It has one, but it mainly affects menus and only works in games whose developers support it. It won’t calm fast camera movement inside games.
Why is it so hard for my child to stop playing Roblox?
Saving works differently in every Roblox game, and Common Sense Media points to limited-time events and Robux offers that can make stopping harder. Roblox’s Parental Controls include screen time limits, and a visual timer outside the game can help too.
Is Roblox on Nintendo Switch?
Not in our catalog. We list Roblox on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and mobile.
